Nesta exposição procuraremos inspiração num material fundamental da joalharia, o ouro, para questionar o uso e extração de materiais preciosos, a reciclagem dos materiais que marca a história da joalharia (com a destruição de tantas peças), o questionamento da preciosidade na joalharia contemporânea e a dimensão sagrada, simbólica, artística, histórica e económica dos materiais, das joias e do ouro em particular, como metáfora da própria joalharia e das suas contradições, símbolo de beleza, eternidade e perfeição, extraído da terra em condições muitas vezes antitéticas a esses valores.
Num momento em que o ouro - e outros metais preciosos - atingem valores muito elevados cabe talvez também questionar de que forma a função de reserva de valor continua a ser relevante na joalharia e como afeta a joalharia contemporânea que se desligou dessa dimensão. O uso do ouro na elaboração das joias é totalmente opcional, sendo apenas um ponto de partida para uma reflexão sobre o momento presente na nossa arte e insere-se no tema mais geral da Bienal que tem a ver com a sustentabilidade e a coexistência dos seres humanos com os diferentes mundos que nos rodeiam, desde o mineral e vegetal ao digital e espiritual, como nos ligamos aos materiais e como podemos ser "alterados" pelas coisas que criamos.

In this exhibition, we seek inspiration from a fundamental material in jewellery—gold—to question the use and extraction of precious materials, the recycling practices that have marked the history of jewellery (often involving the destruction of many pieces), and the very notion of preciousness in contemporary jewellery. We also explore the sacred, symbolic, artistic, historical, and economic dimensions of materials, jewellery, and gold in particular, as a metaphor for jewellery itself and its contradictions. Gold stands as a symbol of beauty, eternity, and perfection, yet is often extracted under conditions that are antithetical to these values.
At a time when gold—and other precious metals—has reached very high values, it may also be worth questioning how its function as a store of value remains relevant in jewellery, and how this impacts contemporary jewellery, which has distanced itself from that dimension. The use of gold in the creation of the pieces is entirely optional, serving only as a starting point for reflection on the present moment in our field. This exhibition is part of the broader theme of the Biennial, which addresses sustainability and the coexistence of human beings with the various worlds around us—from the mineral and vegetal to the digital and spiritual—examining how we connect with materials and how we may be “transformed” by the things we create.
